No romantic getaway, no expensive dinner, and no gifts. Will I at least get a card? Could this really be happening on my anniversary? Have we become an old married couple? Is this what happens in life? Do you hit a certain number and the sweet, romantic love gets swept under the rug as time goes by? We’ve all seen it happen, maybe to our parents, grandparents, or even some of our friends. After 17 years of marriage, I couldn’t expect to celebrate our month-a-versary every month. That faded away after a couple of years. This year our anniversary fell on a Saturday. When does that happen, every seven years? We had the opportunity to relive the day of our wedding, but nope, between two soccer games and a football game, there’s no time to reminisce about the day we took our vows. Then Friday night it is. Nope, it’s football season, and my hubby is a referee — no romantic dinner. It was all sports all day, not quite the romance I was looking for. But I can honestly say I’m not all that surprised. I married a sports fan. This anniversary, as I drank my morning cup of coffee hugging my hubby and watching my two boys wrestled over who should clean up their mess, I whispered, “Happy Anniversary.” This is not exactly how I envisioned the start of our day, but it’s a reflection of the life we created. Between soccer games and getting ready for a two-hour car trip for the home opener of the Fresno State Bulldogs, I had to act quickly to make this a romantic anniversary. My hubby came through, he made me a peanut butter, and jelly sandwich with extra crunchy peanut butter, my favorite and he remembered to pack me a diet coke. While we rushed to the game with kids fighting in the back seat and eating our sandwiches, there was only one thing for me to do, whip out my iPod. We spent the next two hours listening to a playlist I created from the year 1994, the year we married. Nothing like laughing, singing and dancing in the car remembering our day with songs like, “Rump Shaker,” can you feel the romance? This was one of my favorite anniversaries, no expectations, just remembering how and why we fell in love.
